SUMMARY:Capacity Building Workshop on Agroecology as a Climate Change Solution
DESCRIPTION:Background \nThe world currently battles climate change and for that there is a growing list of solutions such as climate smart agriculture\, sustainable agricultural intensification and carbon capture\, carbon offsetting (rather than cutting emissions at source) promoting plantations etc Some of these solutions have dire implications for local communities and ecosystem balance and thus must be discouraged.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Research has shown that agriculture and agrarian reforms rooted in agroecological practice and principles help to cool the planet and ensure climate resilience. This is what small-scale farmers and producers have been calling and defending for many millennia. Politics\, poor implementation and followup are some of the factors standing in the way of such a transition. \nHOMEF has carried out a study on the climate change policies in Nigeria with a view to finding entry points for mainstreaming of Agroecology as a viable solution to the climate catastrophe. This study revealed that there is no policy that directly recognizes agroecology although some elements of it are mentioned in some of the policies. The study recommended a number of policies that can be reviewed for the purpose of mainstreaming agroecology\, one of which is the National Agriculture Resilience Framework (NARF). \nWorkshop Objective \nFollowing that study and building on the significance of Agroecology in our food system and for climate resilience/adaptation HOMEF is organising a capacity building workshop for CSOs to deepen understanding and strengthen advocacy for it’s inclusion in Nigeria’s climate change policy documents. \n\nThe workshop is scheduled to hold on Tuesday 30 August 2022 in Abuja.

SUMMARY:SOE- Building Resilience and People Power
DESCRIPTION:Within the over six decades of oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria\, a lot has changed that has put the region in a very famous position for the avalanche of pollution it suffers – notably as one of the most polluted regions on earth. The communities where these exploration activities have and is still taking place bear the brunt. Ironically\, these communities are among the most marginalized\, under-served\, unrepresented and suppressed in the country; and also most vulnerable to the impacts of the existential climate chaos. \nWith the advent of exploration and exploitation activities\, the communities have gradually become disconnected from the environment they have had intrinsic relationship with over the years which consequently results to livelihood losses\, health issues and sociocultural dislocation. \nThis session will question corporate existence/capture of communities\, establishing the choke lines and inter-linkages as well as build synergies between communities\, academics and CSOs for action – this will serve as a buildup activity to establish common position that will form the campaign demands during the COP28. This session will also critically analyse the proposed Nigeria-Morroco gas pipeline\, x-raying the impacts that such project will have on the wellbeing and livelihoods of communities and peoples.
