SOE on Protected Areas: For Whom, From What?

Focus: This session will be focused on the need and hindrances to the creation of marine protected areas in Nigeria and Africa

Aim: The overall aim of the session is to support the preservation of marine ecosystems and livelihoods along Nigeria’s coastline communities and especially in the Bight of Benin through policy advocacy for creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

Objectives: The objectives of this session are:

• To strengthen the capacity of scholars in riverine areas to monitor and protect their marine environment which will eventually translate into the review of environmental protection norms including the recognition of the place of local knowledge towards securing of local livelihoods in the fishing communities.
• To strengthen and deepen the campaign for the creation of freshwater and marine protected areas in Nigeria
