Between February and April 2020 while the nation is on lock-down due to the coronavirus pandemic, fishers and community people across the Atlantic Coastline of the Niger Delta have witnessed the unusual death and washing ashore fish. This incident has occurred in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom and Ondo States and is cause for serious concern as it threatens the health and livelihood of the people.
In response to this situation, the FishNet Alliance, Health of Mother Earth Foundation, other CSOs and community persons demand that relevant regulatory agencies, including the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulatory Enforcement Agency (NESREA) should ensure that the actual cause of dead fish being washed ashore in the Niger Delta Coastline is identified, addressed and the perpetrators brought to book, should it be from an unnatural cause.
